- MCP 2.0 (released July 28) switches the Model Context Protocol to a stateless architecture — Willison calls it “the most significant change to the MCP spec since it first launched” (Nov 2024), collapsing what used to require two HTTP requests for authentication into one.
- Built three tools to explore the new spec:
mcp-explorer(CLI probe, demoed against Ade Oshineye’s agentic-mermaid.dev server),datasette-mcp(a Datasette plugin exposinglist_databases(),get_database_schema(),execute_sql(), live at datasette.simonwillison.net), andllm-mcp-client(brings MCP server tools into thellmCLI as regular LLM tools; released same day as its own 0.1a0 package). - Takeaway: statelessness meaningfully simplifies both implementation and security — agents get controlled, scoped tool access without needing risky shell/curl capabilities or complex session-management code.
