Mojo🔥 is now open source

The Mojo programming language has officially gone open source, releasing its compiler and toolchain under an Apache 2 license, fulfilling a promise made in May 2023 following its 1.0 release.
Mojo’s original goal to be a full superset of Python shifted around August 2025; it is now positioned as its own language, optimized for “painless” GPU programming with Python-inspired syntax, rather than guaranteeing 100% compatibility with existing Python code.
This change in strategy is partly due to the effectiveness of AI-assisted coding tools in migrating Python to Mojo, with developers confident that future tooling will further smooth this evolution despite the departure from a strict superset model.
