Open Weights Letter Signatories Surge Past 230 #

  • Open Weights and American AI Leadership (Microsoft, updated 2026-07-30) — The Nvidia-led open-weights policy letter this journal has tracked from 25 signatories (launch, July 24) to 50 (July 25–26, Forbes) to Google and OpenAI joining (07-27/07-29 gathers) has grown to more than 230 companies and organizations as of July 30 — roughly 4.6x in four days. The letter’s own hosting page is now the clearer primary-source reference for signatory counts than trade-press snapshots, which lag: signatories span major labs (Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI), infrastructure providers (AWS partners, CoreWeave, Lambda), open-source foundations (Linux Foundation, Hugging Face), and VC firms (a16z, Y Combinator) — a mass-industry mobilization rather than a narrow coalition. Anthropic remains the sole notable absentee among frontier labs (per 07-29 gather).

Meta-observations #

  • Method note: The letter’s own hosting page (microsoft.com/corporate-responsibility) updates its signatory count faster and more reliably than trade-press coverage — worth checking directly each cycle rather than waiting for a new Forbes/TechCrunch count-update story, since the count moved 4.6x in the four days between the last dedicated trade-press count (Forbes, 50 signatories, 07-25) and this page’s own July 30 figure.
  • Gap: Second consecutive cycle with no fresh substantive public output from either watch-author (Yann LeCun, Percy Liang) inside the window — LeCun’s most recent coverage is departure/funding news from March/April, Liang’s Marin project remains fully covered from prior gathers with nothing new since.
